Ford's 1.0-liter EcoBoost Scoops 2012 International Engine of the Year Award

The big winner of the 2012 International Engine of the Year awards is Ford and it's 1.0-liter EcoBoost powerplant, which beat last year's winner, the Fiat 0.9-liter TwinAir, while also achieving the highest score ever with 401 points.

This is the first time that the Blue Oval has won International Engine of the Year in the 13-year history of the awards. And that's not all as the Detroit carmaker's small displacement petrol engine also received two other awards, namely “Best New Engine” and “Best Engine Under 1.0-litre”.

Dean Slavnich, chairman of the International Engine of the Year awards and editor of Engine Technology International magazine, commented:

A Rare Buick Reatta Meeting in Los Angeles

The Buick Reatta is one of those cars with some fairly interesting details that only time will tell if it will become a collectable classic.

Presented in coupe form in 1988 with a soft-top convertible following in 1990, the Reatta was Buick's first modern-era two-seater model. Both body styles remained in production until 1991.

Unusually for a mass produced model, the Reatta was hand-built at the Reatta Craft Centre in Lansing, Michigan. Its platform was essentially a shortened version of the GM E chassis used by the Cadillac Eldorado, Oldsmobile Toronado and Buick Riviera, and was shared with the Cadillac Allante.

Another case of a GM model and one of its airbags opening without a collision of any sorts during a fast ride on the track has hit the web.

The first one we reported on concerned a Chevrolet Camaro back in August of 2011 (read here), when the coupe's side airbags deployed while the driver was drifting the car.

We don't know if they are related, but a similar incident occurred earlier this week when according to Jalopnik, GM Engineer Brad Doerr took his Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon for fun day of auto-crossing before his wedding.

GM Claims Volt Owners Have Collectively Saved a Supertanker of Fuel Since EV went on Sale

From time to time, makers of hybrids and pure-electric vehicles all like to mention how much gasoline fuel their cars saved over the years in comparison with regular models, and General Motors is no different.

The Michigan-based carmaker did its math and discovered that ever since the Chevrolet Volt went on sale at the end of 2010, owners of the plug-in hybrid electric car have collectively saved a supertanker of gasoline after driving 40 million miles (64 million kilometers) on electricity and avoiding the use of more than 2.1 million gallons (8 million liters) of gasoline.

General Motors to Reassess Facebook Advertising, Execs Say Ads Had Little Impact

In a move that may very well have a negative effect Facebook's $105 billion share sale on Friday, General Motors confirmed via its spokesperson that it is reassessing its advertising presence on the world's largest social network.

GM released a statement on the matter after the Wall Street Journal reported today that the Detroit carmaker will stop advertising on Facebook because its top brass determined that their paid ads on the website had little impact on consumers.

"We regularly review our overall media spend and make adjustments as needed," GM spokesman Tom Henderson told the USA Today. "This happens as a regular course of business and it's not unusual for us to move our spending around various media outlets -- especially with the growth of multiple social and digital media outlets."

Toyota Reclaims Sales Crown from General Motors in the First Quarter of 2012

In 2011, some two years after it went into bankruptcy, General Motors managed to recoup the top spot as the world's largest automaker, no thanks to Toyota's production problems that stemmed from the tsunami and other natural disasters that hit Asia last year.

Now, with Toyota having solved most of its problems, the Japanese carmaker is on pace to reclaim its sales crown. According to a report from Bloomberg, the Toyota Group, which includes the Toyota, Lexus, Scion, Hino and Daihatsu brands, saw its global sales rise 18 percent to 2.49 million units in the first quarter of 2012.
