Nokia c3 Game Ultimate Ski Racing 2

It says very little for my prospects as a skier that despite Ultimate Ski Racing 2 being almost a carbon copy of its predecessor I'm no better at this game than I was at the original.

This is a return trip I was more than happy to make, however.

Despite the original game's simplicity, managing to get to the end of the run in anything but last spot was always an immense and enjoyable challenge.

Second time lucky

 

And so it is here.

In fact, pretty much every element of the original Ultimate Ski Racing has been duplicated in this sequel, to the point that telling the difference between them – beyond the odd visual tweak – is near impossible.

Taking to the snow involves switching between just three buttons: '4' to send your skier sliding left, '8' to send him back to the right, and '2' to activate the game's boost, which builds several times throughout each run.

The challenges themselves – viewed from above, with the skier heading towards you – are split between three activities: Giant, Slalom, and Downhill.

All three, however, require you to call upon the same skillset - the abilities to weave at short notice and build up speed during the straights are key to posting a fast time.

Sticky slicky?

In Giant and Slalom, going as close to the gates as you can without touching them will also earn you bonus points aplenty, though any contact adds time to your tally.

Even if you're something of a clutz, however, Ultimate Ski Racing 2's upgrading system – which lets you improve your equipment with money you pick up from on-the-slopes action – ensures you shouldn't have to grind for long to start moving up the charts as you spring from one location the next in World Cup mode.

The game even boasts three-way multiplayer (albeit pass-the-handset).

Even so, it's hard to spot what's been achieved here that the developer hadn't already mastered in the original. As such, though it's easy to enjoy a second spin on this particular series' slopes, the original Ultimate Ski Racing was arguably slick enough for both games.

This may sound simple, and initially it is, but holding your speed is made ever more trying by the increasing unevenness of the undulating landscapes you pass over. To help you with this, a confidence system is in place, which rewards successful tricks with a boost to speed and acceleration. Some larger tricks, such as tweaked flips, do slow you down a little, but significantly they boost confidence, adding a little strategy to a game in need of depth.

When Sega asked itself whether a faithful mobile version of its popular rallying series could be made, it arguably failed to ask a far more important question: whether it should be made? The arcade and console series upon which this is based has long been synonymous with fluid, instinctive racing. Golf is often classified as an elitist game. Only rich folk are able to afford the large selection of clubs or possess the brazen self-confidence required to wear the horrible knitwear.

Gameloft's Let’s Golf takes the opposite view however, with low barriers to entry that will doubtless entertain a vast majority of players, although it isn’t able to cater for the more discerning golfer.

Swingers

In terms of control, it uses the traditional three-click approach to making your shot. The first press of the ‘5’ key starts the power bar climbing, the second stops it to determine the power of your swing, and the third should (if you’ve timed it right) stop inside a green area at the bottom that denotes the ball's sweet spot.

A more powerful stroke can be activated by pressing ‘5’ as the club hits the ball, and applying spin is easily performed by pressing a direction once said sphere is sailing towards the flag.

Pressing ‘0’ before shooting brings up the overhead map, allowing for exact positioning of your shot and automatically adjusting the club to suit the situation.

There’s also the option of cycling through the clubs using the ‘*’ and ‘#’ keys should you need an iron to prevent the ball rolling a mile away from the green.

Once on the green, Let’s Golf highlights its ease of play with different coloured arrows moving at speeds that reflect the various bumps and dips, in theory making it easier to gauge the power of the shot and progressing through the four courses on offer.

I've always found Everybody's Golf's name rather presumptuous. Like almost all sports, golf is an activity that appeal to a specific bunch of men and women. It's definitely not for 'everybody'.

That said, there's a sure fire way that the Japanese use to make each and every sport or hobby appealing to all: latch on some cute and cuddly characters. It's a tactic Sony's Everybody's Golf franchise has employed ever since its inception over ten years ago.

Quite surprisingly, though it's presented like a cartoon Everybody's Golf Mobile has a depth that makes some elements of the more simulation based golf titles out there look positively arcadey. However, in other areas it falls short.

To put it plainly, the actual courses (of which there are four, with three having to be unlocked) are fairly simple. One hole looks much like the other and, despite the odd exception, play involves you thwacking the ball as many times as it takes to get to the green in a fairly straight line, all before what is a relatively simple putt on the green.
