Shelby GT500 and Camaro ZL1 Battle it Out on the Test Track

Whichever way you crunch the numbers, the new 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 owns the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 when it comes to sheer power.

According to their respective manufacturers, at the flywheel, the $54,995 Camaro ZL1's 6.2-liter supercharged V8 produces 580hp at 6,000 rpm and 556 lb.-ft. (754 Nm) at 4,200 rpm, while the $54,200 Shelby GT500's 5.8-liter supercharged V8 delivers 662hp at 6,250 rpm and 631 lb.-ft. (856Nm) at 4,000 rpm.

In a recent dyno test from Inside Line, the Camaro ZL1 delivered 497hp and 497 lb-ft (673Nm) on the rear wheels, while the Shelby GT500, 595hp and 602 lb-ft (815Nm) respectively.

So, how do these numbers translate on the road? Well, after drawing their swords on the dyno, Inside Line took the two cars to the track, and the results are both expected and to some extent, surprising.

Naturally, the more powerful Ford was faster than the Chevy recording a 0-60mph (96km/h) time of 4.0 seconds and completing the quarter mile (400m) in 11.9 seconds with an exit speed of 123.5mph (198.7 km/h).

Retrobuilt will Turn Your Fifth Generation Ford Mustang into a 1969 Shelby GT500 Lookalike

With its sights set on those who aren't satisfied with Ford's retro-modern take of the original pony car yet still want all the advantages that come with a new car, Missouri-based Retrobuilt is expanding its range of 1969 Shelby Mustangs with the addition of a convertible model.

As with Retrobuilt's existing 1969 Shelby GT 500CS Fastback and Mustang GT Fastback models, the 1969 Shelby GT500CS Convertible can be based on any open-top, fifth-generation Ford Mustang (S-197) built from 2005 and onwards.

The conversion package replaces all body panels sans the doors with fiberglass parts, and adds new headlamps and taillights, chrome trim, vinyl striping and a Shelby wheel and tire combo to mimic the looks of the original 1969 model.

The spanking new 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 is not only the most powerful series production Mustang ever made thanks to its supercharged 5.8-liter V8 engine that delivers 662hp and 631 lb.-ft. (856Nm) of torque, but also the fastest with the Blue Oval promising a top speed in excess of 200mph (320km/h) for the Coupe model.

U.S. car magazine MotorTrend sought to prove FoMoCo's claims by testing the surprisingly affordable at US$54,200 (equal to €43,300) pony car.

Ford Taurus and Dodge Charger Cop Cars Chase Down a 2013 Ford Shelby GT500

With 662 SAE-certified ponies kicking under its hood, the revamped 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 promises to be the meanest pony car on the road offering Ferrari (straight-line) performance for Ford prices (the coupe starts at US$54,200).

When the crew over at Motor Trend magazine got their hands on the new Shelby GT500 in, they wanted to do something out of the ordinary so they assembled the new 2013 Ford Taurus Police Interceptor and 2012 Dodge Charger Police Pursuit, to create a short film of sorts.

Caroll Shelby, Creator of the Legendary Cobra, Dies at Age 89

It is a very sad for auto enthusiasts, as Caroll Shelby has died at the age of 89. According to a statement issued by his company, Carroll Shelby International, Mr. Shelby passed away on Thursday night at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas. The cause of death was not disclosed.

"We are all deeply saddened, and feel a tremendous sense of loss for Carroll's family, ourselves and the entire automotive industry," said Joe Conway, president of Carroll Shelby International.

He continued: "There has been no one like Carroll Shelby and never will be. However, we promised Carroll we would carry on, and he put the team, the products and the vision in place to do just that"

Whether you are fan of Shelby's creations or not, there is no denying that he left his stamp on the automotive world with his two most famous products being the 1962 AC-based Shelby American Cobra roadster and in his later years, the Mustang-based performance cars for Ford including the 2013 version of the GT500.

2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Rated at 662HP Making it the World's Most Powerful Series Production V8

The horsepower wars just got a little bit more interesting as Ford announced the final SAE ratings for the supercharged 5.8-liter V8 engine in the 2013 Shelby GT500.

When the Blue-Oval revealed the Coupe and Convertible versions of the new GT500, it said the force-fed V8 produced an estimated 650 ponies and 600 lb-ft (814Nm) of peak torque, but according to the SAE ratings released by Ford today, the eight-cylinder unit has a peak output of 662-horsepower and 631 lb.-ft. (856Nm) of torque.

the Riverside International Automotive Museum, not easy to find, but worth the time to tour

the museum owns, and restores as well as repairs race cars.  This is the famous Gurney Eagle

I'll go back and get better photos of the race cars one day, but the lesson you can get from looking at them is how fast design changed after the 70's. Not much is different pre 1960's from decade to decade, but as soon as wings and downforce came into play, a lot changed quick

Above is a Vector. There were a couple of movies that had them featured... they were made in So Cal, but it wasn't a good business plan, they made them of expensive materials in some ways, liek carbon fiber, but the windows can't open, the interior is really cheap GM stuff like switches etc... and half way through building them, they could no longer get the engines they'd been using and switched to Lamborghini engines
Tamerlane Thoughts blogspot toured here a year or two ago, and did a much better post about this collection of Maserati, the largest in So Cal I have no doubt

Ol Yeller 3 ahead of the Cobras and european cars

Great photos sometimes have great stories... like the above... that is a fridge or bbq grill... in place of the window netting you might be used to seeing. McCluskey arrived at the racetrack to learn that he'd be required to have some form of restraining material in the window... so he went and found what you see above, and put in it in time for the race. I love racing stories.

Here is what driving to it looks like, that dead end above, well don't go that far. Take the left turn
 Past this building labeled 833
Past this one labeled 815... it and the previous 833 will be on your right, as well as the museum below, and it blends into the surrounding builds really well. Why the camoflage? Don't know.
