The First Documented Crash of a Scion FR-S

We knew it was destined to happen sooner or later: the first reported crash of a Scion FR-S. The hapless driver is a member of the FT86 Club forums who goes by the nickname Neutral.

The 24-year old FR-S owner posted two pictures and a rather remorseful account of the incident that occurred during a right turn when he lost control of the rear-wheel drive sports car at about 20mph (32km/h) and then ended up smashing it into a telephone pole.

Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S Recalled…Sort of…to Replace Owner’s Manual

The Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S have just touched down in the States but they have already received their first recall.

However, buyers do not need to fret since the recall does not affect the cars themselves but their owner's manuals, which evidently, are the same.

2013 Scion FR-S On Sale in the U.S. Now Priced from 24,200

Finally, after a very long and anticipated wait, the 2013 FR-S sports coupe has arrived in Scion dealerships nationwide taking its place as the halo car for Toyota's youth-brand in the States.

The Scion-badged twin of the Subaru BRZ is available with a high-revving 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder delivering 200-horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, in a single trim level.

Gazoo Builds Twin-Charged Toyota GT86 Sports FR Concept with 315-Horses

All this time, automotive enthusiasts have been complaining about the lack of power in the Toyota GT86, Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ triplets.

Whilst the three companies have no current plans to address these concerns, Toyota's motorsports partner Gazoo Racing has a solution in the works as previewed by new a concept version of the European market GT86 named Sports FR.

Gazoo Racing's engineers have added both a supercharger and a turbocharger to the GT86's Subaru-sourced 2.0-liter flat four boosting output from 200hp to 315hp (320PS) and peak torque from 205Nm (151 lb-ft) to 421Nm (310.5 lb-ft). A modified six-speed manual pushes power to the rear wheels.

Toyota GT86 Sports Coupe Priced from $51,400 in Holland, Twice as Much as the FR-S in the US!

Do you remember our recent poll where we said, "You should feel fortunate that you can acquire a fairly rewarding and fun to drive sports car for $25,000 (~€19,500)"?

If our link to our older post on the prices of the Nissan 370Z around the world did not convince you, maybe this will.

Whereas in the U.S.A, $24,200 (€18,850) - not including a $730 destination and handling fee, will get you into the base 2013 FR-S, over in Holland, our Dutch friends from Autoblog.nl report that its European sibling, the Toyota GT86, will go on sale on July 1 with a starting price of €39,990. That is equal to US$51,400 at today's exchange rates, or more than double the price of the FR-S Coupe!

Poll: Which Sports Car Would You Buy for Around $25,000?

Let us just start off by saying that if you live in the States, you should feel fortunate that you can acquire a fairly rewarding and fun to drive sports car for $25,000 (approx. €19,300) or even less if you don't care much about all the bells and whistles of modern automobiles. If you are wondering why, head over to this post.

Now, with the recent arrival of the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ twins as well as a pricing announcement for the 2013 Ford Focus ST, which goes on sale later this year, buyers searching to buy a sports car for around $25k will have plenty of options to choose from.

The automotive menu at this price point includes front-wheel drive sport hatchbacks such as the MazdaSpeed 3 and VW Golf GTI, rear-wheel drive coupes like the Hyundai Genesis 2.0 Turbo and Chevy Camaro V6 and the Mazda MX-5 Miata roadster.

Scion FR-S Convertible Rumors Re-Surface, Could Enter the Market by 2014

While Scion has no current plans to offer a turbocharged version of the FR-S sports coupe, the word on the street is that Toyota's North American subsidiary is preparing a 2+2 convertible or a pure two-seater roadster version of its rear-wheel drive model. Keep in mind, the images you see here are from Cartel's 2012 FR-S Speedster Concept.

The story comes courtesy of the team over at Car&Driver that claims to have confirmed rumors about the development of a soft-top Scion FR-S. The news follows a recent statement from the Toyota 86's chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, who told a German magazine, "The GT 86 was designed from the outset to be built as a convertible."

New Photo Gallery of Scion FR-S Plus Videos that Details the Development of the Subaru BRZ

As the two North American versions of the Toyota 86 rear-wheel drive sports coupe, the 2013 Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ, begin arriving in dealerships across the States, both automakers had something new to share with us this week.

On its behalf, Scion dropped a fresh gallery of high-resolution photos of the FR-S, which starts at $24,200, while Subaru released a pair of videos that explain the work that went behind the scenes to develop the BRZ that is priced from $25,495 in the U.S.

2013 Scion FR-S Rolls on to the Dyno to Prove its Worth

Toyota, Subaru and Scion all tell us that their co-developed trio of rear-wheel drive sports coupes, namely the 86/GT86, BRZ and FR-S, are powered by the same 2.0-liter flat-four that produces 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft (205Nm) at the flywheel.

As is common these days with any newly launched model, independent testers, in this case, the folks over at Edmund's Insideline, strapped the North American market 2013 Scion FR-S on the dyno to see what kind of numbers it would produce.

The tuning industry is wasting no time getting ready for the U.S. market launch of the 2013 Scion FR-S sports coupe.

Not long after Scion announced pricing for its first rear-wheel drive model, Five Axis via its production arm named FIVE:AD (Five Axis Design) has presented a new styling package that will be soon available through Scion dealerships.

Scion FR-S Speedster is a Concept Car Created by Cartel Customs

As it turns out, we were right to assume that the open-top 2013 Scion FR-S spotted at this past weekend's Formula Drift event in Long Beach, California, was a tuning concept.

The speedster version of the Scion FR-S was created by Cartel Customs, a California-based company headed by Jeremy Lookofsky, which specializes in the design and manufacturing of custom display vehicles and motorcycles.

While the name may not ring a bell, you've probably seen some of Cartel's work at previous SEMA shows such as last year's Scion iQ Pit Bull, the 2010 Scion xB Stretch Limousine and the 2009 Scion tC Low Rider concepts.

The company's new Scion FR-S Speedster drops the coupe's top and most of the interior appointments gaining a two-seat configuration with a mid-mounted instrument panel.

Scion FR-S Speedster Appears at Formula Drift Event in Long Beach

A chopped version of the just launched in the States Scion FR-S made a special appearance at the 2012 Long Beach Formula Drift even in California this past weekend and was snagged on camera by a forum member over at the FT86Club.

While there's no official information on the speedster model, evidently it's some sort of racing concept based on the production FR-S, possibly one we'll see at this year's SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

Toyota 86 Coupe Prepped with TRD Parts, Plus Video of Ken Gushi Driving Scion FR-S

In a sort of two for one deal, we present to you one of the first videos of the Japanese domestic market (JDM) Toyota 86 fitted with a selection of parts from the brand's in-house tuning division TRD, and a second clip of its North American twin, the Scion FR-S in both stock and racing forms.

The Toyota 86 TRD model features a different exhaust system plus a sports suspension package and a more powerful braking system. You can read more about TRD's offerings in our previous post here.

This Toyota 86 is Powered by a Lexus IS F 5.0-liter V8!

Even though few consumers have actually driven it, many have been…complaining about the lack of power in the Toyota GT 86 and 86, Subaru BRZ and for North America, the Scion FR-S, all of which share a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated boxer-engine yielding 200-horses at 7,000rpm and a peak torque of 205Nm (151.2 lb-ft) at 6,600rpm.

That's music to the ears of the aftermarket industry, which will happily provide a lot more ponies in all sorts of ways, depending on the depth of buyers' pockets.

Scion Officially Confirms New 2013 FR-S Coupe's Pricing and Specs, Starts from $24,200*

After a leaked dealer document hit the web-o-sphere on Wednesday night revealing the MSRP of the 2013 FR-S, Scion today came out with an official announcement confirming both pricing and specifications.

There will only be one trim level for the FR-S with buyers having the option of a six-speed manual gearbox model that starts at $24,200 (€18,300) or a 6-speed automatic transmission model with paddle shifters and an asking price of $25,300 (€19,200).

If you add a $730 destination and handling fee (*), prices rise to $24,930 and $26,030 for the manual and automatic models respectively. Sales will begin this spring.

Leaked Dealer Document Reveals 2013 Scion FR-S Prices, Starts from $24,200

The Toyota-loving crew over at FT-86 Club has got its hands on a leaked dealer document that reveals U.S. pricing for the new 2013 Scion FR-S sports coupe. If all that's said in the document is true, then Scion will come out with official pricing tomorrow, March 22.

According to the paper, Scion will offer a single trim level of the FR-S with prices, excluding a processing and handling fee, starting from US$24,200 for the model equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox and from US$25,300 for the version fitted with the 6-speed automatic transmission.

EPA Releases Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S Fuel Economy Numbers

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has beat both Subaru and Scion in releasing the official fuel-economy ratings for the new BRZ and FR-S sports coupes.

Being that the Subaru BRZ and the Scion FR-S are in essence identical twins, the fuel efficiency and greenhouse emission numbers are the same for both models.

According to the EPA, when the rear-wheel drive coupes' 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is matched to the standard 6-speed manual gearbox, they return 22mpg city, 30mpg highway and 25mpg combined.

Subaru Kicks Off Series Production of BRZ and Toyota 86 in Japan

Subaru held a special ceremony today at its Gunma factory in Ota-city, Japan, to mark the series production start of the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 (named GT 86 in Europe) rear-wheel drive coupes. The presidents of both companies attended the event.

The factory, which will produce both models as well as the Impreza by March 2013, underwent several changes to cope with the extra capacity.
