Battlewagons and Pig Boats

Taken from Irvin Block, The Real Book About Ships (Garden City Books, 1953).  The illustrator was Manning deV. Lee (Manning de Villanueva Lee; 1894-1980) who was a Pennsylvania-born illustrator of comics, children's magazines such as "American Boy Magazine" and children's books.  (He shares his Pennsylvania heritage with Steve Ditko, the artist who, along with Stan Lee, co-created Spiderman.)

(The USS Nautilus did not go to sea until 17 January 1955 when she signaled her historic message, "Underway on nuclear power."  So, at the time the above book was published, "atomic engines" were still "top secret."  And, of course, the Nautilus did go on to set many records for submerged cruising.)
